PANews reported on December 13 that according to Cointelegraph, the consumer rights organization "Public Citizen" and other interest groups are urging US lawmakers to take action before the next Congress is sworn in to confirm Caroline Crenshaw's re-election as a member of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). In a letter to the U.S. Senate on December 12, more than 40 organizations asked lawmakers to vote in favor of Crenshaw's nomination, which will allow her to continue working at the SEC until 2029.
The Senate Banking Committee was originally scheduled to make a decision on the SEC commissioner nomination on December 11, but then postponed the vote , leaving many questioning whether lawmakers would have enough time to confirm Crenshaw's nomination during the current congressional session. "The bipartisan SEC is in jeopardy," the letter reads. "The incoming Trump administration has indicated that they are considering breaking the tradition of having the opposition party pick the two minority seats."
Crenshaw, a Democrat, was initially nominated to serve until June 2024, but she was allowed to continue working at the SEC until the end of 2025. President-elect Trump is expected to be sworn in on January 20, 2025, and the new Republican majority in Congress will be sworn in on January 3, so the Democratic Party has a very narrow window of opportunity to confirm SEC commissioners while it controls the Senate.
