Can you have a brief introduction about Umbrella? What is its vision and mission?


Umbrella Network has two primary missions. First, Umbrella wants to decentralize ownership of the oracle we're building. We believe an oracle is a critical piece of infrastructure for decentralized applications. And so, we think it's crucial that ownership and control is not held by a single person or small group of executives. And that's why we're determined to put the power into the hands of our community.


The second goal is to drive the cost of on chain data to as close to $0.00 as possible. We believe only once data is incredibly cheap will we have a thriving decentralized world. With our technology, we believe we have a massive cost advantage over the competition. And so we will make the most commonly used data available for free. And to support continued innovation by startups and smaller enterprises, we'll offer free data tier.

Why did you choose Polkadot?

I'd like to talk about why we chose both Polkastarter for our IDO and have plans to build on Polkadot. Because I think they are very closely related.


The Polkastarter community has the potential to rival those of YEarn and other leaders in the space. The community of crypto enthusiasts are unparalleled if you ask me. The quality of the projects that are launching here is superior to any other launchpad we've seen in the market. Just look at the list: from YOP Finance, Bridge Mutual, MahaDAO, etc, etc. These projects are the future of DeFi. So how could I turn down an opportunity to join and sit in a room with them.


And of course, the focus on Polkadot. While we're built on Ethereum currently, we have every intention of moving over to Polkadot in short order. The advantages there are just too obvious. From the low transaction costs to the interoperability and the ability to launch and message across parachains. These are all incredible enablers of blockchain applications.


And I believe the Polkastarter community and its ecosystem of projects are really what's going to drive Polkadot to realize its full potential. And Umbrella Network looks forward to providing the underlying oracle infrastructure for this amazing group.

Can you tell us the background and story of your team?

For the past 10 years, the senior team at Umbrella and I focused on building highly performant and scalable products, primarily in the digital advertising industry. I served as the Co-Founder and COO of Gimbal, a buy side platform that recently acquired TrueX from Disney.


Many of us were frustrated by the fraud, corruption and general lack of transparency in digital advertising. In 2017, a few of us discovered Ethereum. We were totally blown away. We thought it'd be the perfect tool to solve our frustrations with digital advertising. And so we decided to start Lucidity to provide a transparent, scalable marketing analytics solution to advertisers. Lucidity currently works with some leading traditional brands like Toyota, Hyundai, KFC and GroupM.


We noticed that the oracle market was also undergoing similar issues to what we experienced in digital advertising, mainly that oracles were slow and inefficient, writing one piece of data per blockchain transaction. That simply doesn't scale well enough to support large enterprise level applications . And so, we decided to take the same underlying technology that we were using to power advertising buys for clients like Toyota and GroupM, and move it over to the oracle space.

What are the current competitors on the market? What are the advantages of Umbrella?


Current oracle solutions require you to compromise between security of the data or freshness / liveliness of the data. With Umbrella you can finally have both. We use multiple data sources so that you aren't at risk of data manipulation at the source as we' ve seen in so many recent flash loan and oracle hacks. We also use a Delegated Proof of Stake system so that there is an economic incentive and disincentive layer unlike other leading solutions that run on Proof of Authority. And finally, with our Layer 2 merkle tree solution we can write thousands of pieces of data on a single blockchain transaction. So we have low cost data which ultimately means we can also provide more data.


So, we're just as secure and we're much more affordable because of our technology.

How is Umbrella token distributed, and how is the incentive distribution part designed?


The $UMB tokens will be sold through Polkastarter's IDO platform on 9 February. We will be selling approximately 5 million tokens.  


The UMB token is designed to promote long term holding of the token. Over 70% of the tokens have a 4 year linear vesting schedule. Our Private buyers are subject to 18 month linear vesting schedules with no initial unlock. And we give rewards to token stakers via a secondary token called rUMB. rUMB can be redeemed for UMB 1 year after it is initiated. So a buyer has to believe in the long term value of the project.

We have programs for validators and developers to get UMB tokens. We believe they are crucial part of the ecosystem. We will also have various programs for the community who create art for the project, become ambassadors, serve on governance, help us with marketing, business development and much more.


And of course there is the liquidity mining feature where for staking UMB tokens, users get rewards and a share of the user fees.

How many companies invest in Umbrella?? What are the utilities of Umbrella?


We have a number of private investors who supported us through the early stages of the project. They include SRC Capital and Youbi Capital who were a couple of our initial supporters. In addition, we're backed by NGC, Monday Capital, CMS, Zokyo and others in our Private rounds.


The UMB token can be used in two ways: 1) as a governance token, and 2) as a liquidity mining token where rewards are distributed for staking within the system and ultimately sharing of user fees.

Can you share us some statistics of Umbrella and what is your next plan?


So Umbrella currently supports approximately 1,000 datapairs ranging from the most commonly used crypto pairs, to middle and long tail of the crypto market, indexes, options data and real world assets like equities, Fx and commodities like oil and gas.


Over the next year, our goal is to on board new projects, increase the number of validators, and drive the cost of data down for the entire blockchain market. In parallel to that, we aim to decentralized governance in 2021.


Umbrella當前支持大約1,000個數據對,從最常用的加密對到加密市場的中長期,指數,期權數據以及諸如證券、外匯、石油和天然氣等大宗商品。
