PANews reported on December 16 that according to Forbes, security company ESET has just released its latest threat report, which examines threat trends from June to November 2024. The number of password-stealing attacks against cryptocurrency wallets has increased, and the increase in such attacks against macOS users has been the most significant. The report pointed out: According to ESET's telemetry data in the second half of 2024, the number of password-stealing software across multiple platforms (especially Windows, macOS and Android) has increased", but compared with the first half of the year, the number of detections of password-stealing software for cryptocurrency wallets on macOS has more than doubled. At the same time, the number of password-stealing software on the Windows platform has increased by 56%, while financial threats on the Android platform, including password-stealing malware, have increased by 20%.
ESET's analysis showed a 127% surge in the number of password stealers targeting the macOS platform, specifically targeting credentials associated with cryptocurrency wallets. "While these threats cannot be simply categorized as password stealers simply because of their broader capabilities, they do reveal a significant uptick in password stealing activity on the macOS platform," security researchers noted. From a geographic perspective, ESET's analysis noted that Bitcoin and other cryptocurrency attacks on macOS were mostly directed at the United States, followed by Italy, China, Spain, and Japan.
