PANews reported on October 24 that according to CNBC, OpenAI is disbanding its "AGI Readiness" team, and the team members will be reassigned to other teams at OpenAI. The team was previously responsible for evaluating OpenAI's ability to handle increasingly powerful AI technology and assessing the world's readiness for such technology.
On Wednesday, Miles Brundage, chief advisor to the AGI Readiness team, announced his resignation in a Substack post. He said the main reason for his resignation was that he believed his external research could have a greater impact, the opportunity cost was too high, and he hoped to reduce bias and believed that his goals at OpenAI had been achieved. Brundage also pointed out that neither OpenAI nor other cutting-edge laboratories, nor the world at large, are ready to deal with AGI. He plans to start or join a nonprofit organization to focus on research and advocacy for AI policies, and emphasized that without concerted efforts, AI will find it difficult to achieve maximum safety and benefit. An OpenAI spokesperson said the company fully supports Miles' decision and thanks him for his contributions. They look forward to learning from Miles' work and paying attention to its impact, and believe that in his new role he will continue to raise the quality standards of industry and government policy making.
Previously, in May last year, OpenAI decided to disband its Superalignment team, which focused on long-term risks in AI, just one year after it announced the establishment of the team.
