The approval of a spot Bitcoin (BTC) exchange-traded fund (ETF) is a watershed moment for the cryptocurrency industry. The development paves the way for institutional investors to increase their investments in the cryptocurrency space.

Following the launch of the BTC ETF, the fund also decided to promote an ETF based on Ethereum (ETH, the second largest cryptocurrency by market value).

A review of 13F filings disclosing long positions in publicly traded securities further demonstrates institutional interest in Ethereum.

The reports reveal large amounts of cryptocurrencies held by various investment firms, including hedge funds, family offices and other financial institutions.

Which institutional funds hold Ethereum?

13F filings are quarterly reports required by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) from institutional investment managers, and they provide valuable insights into institutional holdings.

These documents provide a unique perspective on how institutions are engaging with Ethereum compared to traditional assets.

As of January 31, 2025, ETH ETF inflows totaled $2.73 billion, with Grayscale's outflows creating downward pressure. It is worth noting that several ETF holders have not yet made their 13F filings public.

Here is the full list of institutional holders of the Ethereum ETF (filings as of January 31, 2025):
