PANews reported on January 14 that according to ajunews, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of South Korea (MOFA) issued a statement on its official website with the United States and Japan to explain North Korea's suspected involvement in cryptocurrency theft and emphasized the importance of public-private sector cooperation. According to the trilateral organization, North Korea stole about $660 million in cryptocurrency in 2024. This includes $308 million stolen from DMM Bitcoin, $50 million stolen from Upbit, $16.13 million stolen from Rain Management, $235 million stolen from WazirX, and $50 million stolen from Radiant Capital.

The three countries stated that North Korean cyber programs pose a threat to South Korea, the United States, Japan and the international community, especially to the integrity and stability of the international financial system. It is imperative for the three countries to strengthen civil-public cooperation and actively combat malicious cyber crimes. The three countries also advised relevant industries to actively refer to relevant recommendations and documents, be familiar with solutions to eliminate cyber threats, and reduce the risks of hiring North Korean IT personnel.
