PANews reported on December 31 that on December 30, local time, US President Biden ordered all federal government executive departments and agencies to close on January 9, 2025 to pay tribute to Jimmy Carter, the 39th President of the United States, who passed away on the 29th. Biden said in a statement that the heads of federal government executive departments and agencies may decide to keep some offices and facilities open for reasons of national security, defense or other public needs. Previously, the White House had declared January 9, 2025 a national day of mourning to commemorate Carter.

Historically, U.S. stock markets have been closed for a national day of mourning on the day of a former president’s funeral, and that is expected to be the case this time around. Nonessential federal employees will also have the day off, which could affect economic data released that day.
