PANews reported on November 5 that the Korean Personal Information Protection Committee held its 18th plenary meeting on the 4th and decided to impose an administrative fine of more than 21.6 billion won (about 112 million yuan) on Meta, an American Internet company, for violating the Korean Personal Information Protection Act. According to the investigation results, Meta collected sensitive information such as religious views, political views, and whether they were married to the same sex from the personal profiles of about 980,000 Korean users on Facebook, its social platform. According to the Personal Information Protection Act, information involving personal thoughts and beliefs, political opinions, sex life, etc. is listed as sensitive information that must be strictly protected and is prohibited from being processed in principle.
