Trump plans to reshape cryptocurrency policy
According to Bloomberg, people familiar with the matter revealed that Trump's transition team is actively screening candidates to fill this unprecedented new position. This will be the first time that the White House has established a role specifically focused on cryptocurrency.
It is unclear what the exact nature of the position would be — whether it would be a senior-level position or a “cryptocurrency czar” responsible for federal policy and regulation. Cryptocurrency industry advocates have called for such a role to have direct access to the president to ensure the industry’s interests are strongly represented in the new administration.
Meeting with industry leaders
The report pointed out that the Trump team has met with several crypto industry leaders, including executives from Bitcoin mining companies and cryptocurrency exchanges. In addition, Trump also attended the "National Bitcoin Conference" and delivered a speech during the campaign, showing a strong interest in digital assets.
Bloomberg revealed that some cryptocurrency allies had visited Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate in recent days to interview and discuss personnel with members of the transition team. Among those who allegedly met with Trump was Brian Brooks, a former Coinbase and Binance.US executive who is also considered a potential candidate for the new SEC chairman.
Promoting a new policy framework
Trump's campaign promise to take a friendlier stance toward the crypto industry could boost the approval of investment vehicles beyond Bitcoin and Ethereum. He also plans to replace current SEC Chairman Gary Gensler and create a new presidential advisory committee on digital assets.
At the same time, there are reports that the government is considering appointing an official to lead a small team to serve as a liaison between Congress, the White House and regulators such as the SEC and CFTC. This position is expected to play a key role in the formulation of cryptocurrency policies and communication between government departments.
