PANews reported on November 20 that according to The Washington Post, the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) led by Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy, appointed by President-elect Trump, is considering developing a free mobile tax filing app to simplify the filing process for American taxpayers. Currently, the plan is still in the preliminary discussion stage. Musk and Ramaswamy have always advocated simplifying tax laws. If DOGE's plan can be realized, it may promote the efficiency of the US tax system.
The report said that although this idea aims to improve tax efficiency, it also faces many challenges, such as the difficulty of obtaining relevant expenditure proof and the complexity of tax laws. DOGE officials mentioned on the social platform X that the US tax code has grown from less than 1.5 million words in 1955 to more than 16 million words today, and Americans spend a total of 6.5 billion hours each year preparing and filing taxes, emphasizing the importance of simplifying the tax law.
Currently, the IRS offers a free web-based filing program but has not yet launched a mobile app. DOGE's potential move could pose a challenge to existing tax service companies, and the stock prices of several companies providing accounting and tax services fell after the news was released.
