The man, named Joseph Strange, worked at Eminem's studio in Ferndale, near Detroit, for four years, but lost his job in 2021. According to an affidavit from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), as part of his separation agreement, he was explicitly prohibited from electronically disseminating Eminem's works. Strange sold about 25 songs that Eminem created but had not yet released between 1999 and 2018, which were played, shared or sold online without the consent of Eminem or his music copyright owner, Interscope Capital Labels Group. The U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of Michigan said Eminem was charged with copyright infringement and interstate transportation of stolen items.
