PANews reported on May 21 that according to Decrypt, American tourist Jacob Irwin-Cline was kidnapped by a fake Uber driver in London and lost $123,000 worth of cryptocurrency. The case occurred in the early morning of May 9. The victim left a nightclub in Soho and mistakenly took a disguised vehicle. The driver obtained the password of his mobile phone after making him unconscious by smoking a cigarette containing scopolamine.
The surveillance showed that the victim logged into a car model other than the one shown on the app. Police confirmed that the suspect stole digital assets, including $72,000 in XRP and $50,000 in Bitcoin, through his Revolut account. London police said the case is still under investigation and no suspect has been arrested. Experts recommend that travelers use hardware wallets and enable multi-factor authentication.
