PANews reported on December 29 that according to The Miner Mag, the Bitcoin mining pool Foundry USA Pool has refunded a transfer that "inadvertently" paid 8.18 BTC in transaction fees, worth approximately US$777,000.
On December 19, Foundry USA Pool mined Bitcoin block 875475, which included a transaction in which the sender attached a fee of 8.18 BTC, 91,127 times higher than the necessary fee. Foundry posted on social media that it had contacted the transferor who "inadvertently" paid the fee. The mining pool confirmed that it had refunded the transaction fee to the transferor after "careful consideration", otherwise the fee would have been distributed to mining customers who contributed hashrate to the Foundry mining pool.
This is not the first time that a large Bitcoin mining pool has refunded unusually high Bitcoin transaction fees due to an unexpected event. In November 2023, Antpool refunded a transaction fee of 83.6 BTC, which was worth $3.1 million at the time.
