PANews reported on December 13 that according to CryptoBriefing, Philip Banks, the creator of the ChillGuy meme coin, announced in a tweet that he would grant intellectual property (IP) to the CHILLGUY token team. Subsequently, when people linked Banks' account to the release of another new meme coin featuring his character Philb on Pump.fun, speculation that his X account had been hacked arose. The new coin quickly gained popularity, reaching a market value of $1 million before it was completely sold off.
The official CHILLGUY X community account also expressed confusion: "We were surprised by a tweet from Philip Banks tonight, announcing that he had granted a license and intellectual property rights. We will continue to seek details. Please remain vigilant and do not transfer money based on unverified information."
Many were confused by Banks’ sudden change in stance, which initially intended to take drastic measures against unauthorized use of the ChillGuy character, to now licensing intellectual property to the token team. Despite the controversy, the market value of the ChillGuy token initially rose by 30% after the announcement of the intellectual property licensing. However, this gain was quickly erased.
